Course Description: The word “essay” might make you think of some five-paragraph written to fulfill an English class assignment, but a personal essay is a different kind of animal. In the simplest sense, it is a true story well told—memoir in short form, or a short story that happens to be true, or a narrative poem without line breaks. We’ll use ideas from veteran creative nonfiction writers like Mary Karr, Elizabeth Gilbert, and Ann Hood to explore this question and inspire new work. Each participant will draft a complete essay and receive feedback as well as guidance for revising and submitting work for publication.
*Note: It’s important for this class that all participants can attend the first meeting.
